Friendship, its meaning….My Thoughts!!!

Good morning, friends! It’s nice to connect with you on a Sunday morning. I am told that in India and some other countries, the first Sunday of August is celebrated as Friendship Day. So, here’s wishing you all a happy Friendship Day!!!!

As it turns out, Sunday mornings can sometimes be a good occasion for reflecting. (They offer the perfect setting, too, given that one is more relaxed and prepared to engage in a conversation with oneself !!!)

I am wondering what friendship is …. how has its meaning evolved over the years; how it means different things to different people at different stages of their lives; also, with social media such as Facebook and Twitter becoming an integral part of our lives, how modern-day friendships are influencing the more traditional friendships between and among members of a family.

I am reminded of a famous quote, which, if my memory serves me correctly, says a friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and sings it back to you when you have forgotten how it goes. Indeed. Friendship is about putting your feet up and knowing that someone is there to bail you out when the entire world walks out on you. And, come to think of it, in today’s hectic world friendship is THE most reliable relationship for social, intellectual, and creative stimulations.

As I write this, I am thinking that in some ways friendship has been defined by popular films. You and I have watched several of them which portray friendships and human affections in myriad ways.

Commercials advertisements depict friendships, too. Some of the popular advertisements in newspapers and magazines and on TV give popular expression to the various facets of friendship. Most of the advertisements and commercial campaigns use friendship as a theme for selling products; they do it by reinforcing the importance of friendship for the youth of today in connecting with their circle of friends or the world at large.

The romanticisation of friendship brings me to another point, which is that the forums for building friends have changed. Technology has intruded into the social media realm; consequently, friendships can be global yet physically distant from you. This virtual world tells you that you are not alone even when you are literally sitting alone in your apartment; that you could be friends with thousands of people at the click of a button !!!!!

However, there is a downside to it, as is evident from a spate of suicides by young people, out of despair, frustration or loneliness. Ironical, isn’t it, that you could be having hundreds and thousands of “friends” on Facebook or Twitter and yet fall prey to loneliness!!!!

If there is one message that comes out loud and clear from all of this is that there is an urgent need for boys and girls, and people of all ages who are regulars on social media utilities such as Facebook or Twitter, to have an intimate forum at hand for sharing thoughts, feelings, frustrations, joys …. I believe that such virtual spaces can and should be of immense help to all of us to not only connect with others but also with ourselves more meaningfully. WHAT DO YOU THINK????? PLEASE KEEP YOUR COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS AND QUERIES COMING. I AM ALWAYS DELIGHTED TO RECEIVE YOUR FEEDBACK. I ENJOY A GOOD CONVERSATION AND MY BLOG GIVES ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE YOU IN A DIALOGUE. I AM HERE TO TALK, AND TO LISTEN. SO IT WILL BE NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU.

I want to leave you with this thought: Friendship is beautiful but like all things beautiful, it too needs care and nurture. We must therefore never lose an opportunity to express our feelings and the warmth that we feel for our friends. It is by celebrating days such as today’s that we get to cherish the presence of our friends and loved ones in our lives and acknowledge the integral role that they play in our lives. Not only that, Friendship Day sheds light on how essential it is for people to maintain strong social bonds.

So, I leave you with my thoughts on friendship and extend my hearty wishes to all on this day!!!!!!

Until we meet again, Jai Hind!!!!!!!!!
