A rape survivor can overcome the trauma if family stands by her

Friends, I want to share with you the story of a woman with 70% disability who lives in a small village with her husband and his family. She was raped by a family acquaintance. The terrified woman did not go to the police straight away because the accused threatened her with dire consequences if she reported him to the police. Reluctantly, she informed her mother-in-law about what happened with her. When the mother-in-law rushed to the house of the accused, she was abused and beaten up by the accused. The accused did not stop at that. He threatened the woman he had raped with abducting and raping her 10-year-old daughter!!!!! Look at the audacity of the accused!!!!!!!! If it could happen with this unfortunate victim, it could happen to others, too.

It was then that the harassed and victimised family sought the help of my team at the #KDSinghFoundation. I am happy to share that the rape survivor and her family are getting all the required assistance so that the cause of justice is served and the guilty is brought to book. After my team intervened, a lawyer was brought in to pursue the case in the courts. The case is being heard in the courts and I am confident that the court will do justice to her.

Fortunately, her husband is a real support. His wife’s condition has not caused any bitterness in him or affected his attitude and behaviour towards her. In fact, he continues to support her like a rock. He’s Mr Right!!!!! In sharp contrast is the man accused of raping her, who represents everything that is wrong with a patriarchal society, where a male can take anything for granted and treat women with contempt.

Though both the men in question – the husband of the rape survivor and the man accused of raping her – come from the same milieu, their attitudes and response to situations reveal how different they are in terms of what is acceptable in society and what is not. If only there were more men like this rape survivor’s husband!!!!! I sincerely hope and pray that all rape survivors get similar support at home. There can be nothing more comforting than the reassurance of one’s immediate family.

As I write this comes the news of a family’s struggle for justice to a #rape survivor. I have my told my team at the #KDSinghFoundation to make enquiries and reach out to this family which lives at Sonepat in Haryana.

Jai Hind!!!!!!!!!!
